Fantasy Football – Gameweek 33

by

I normally like to decide on my captain late on Friday or Saturday morning (if I get up in time). You get all the team news and can make an informed decision about who would be best. Last week I was on holiday over the Easter weekend meaning I had to make my pick on Thursday, thus having no inkling of Fergie’s plan to rest Ronaldo. Cue him getting me two lousy points in his 22 minute cameo. Coupled with the fact I had Clint Dempsey’s 15 points marooned on the bench, it all added up to another rotten week as I do my level best to finish fifth in our six team league. I’m just about holding on to third but it’s been bad week after bad week at the mo. For what it’s worth here are this week’s picks…

Top three captain picks not named Ronaldo:

1. Rooney/Man Utd – With Chelsea facing a tough game against Everton and Liverpool facing Arsenal, it leaves Man Utd as the only top four team with a relatively simple game. Pompey at home shouldn’t provide too much of a challenge and if you’re not picking C-Ron, then Rooney is the next best bet.

2. Crouch/Portsmouth – He’s been very hit and miss recently but has two games this week. One is against Man Utd away so we probably can’t expect too much from that but the other is against Bolton at home. Gary Megson’s men are effectively safe and only two teams have conceded more goals (30) away from home. Here’s hoping Crouch can get a goal or assist.

3. Ireland/Man City – Pretty much the only consistent player for Mark Hughes’ side this year and he’s picked up a bit of form again after a bit of a slump. West Brom are a bit like Derby last season, you simply make the top scorer of their opponents captain that week, so high are the chances of that person getting good points.

Three potential transfers in:

1. Macheda/Man Utd – Two match winning goals in two games and he’ll only get more opportunities whilst the big guns are rested for the Champions League or if United are struggling to break someone down. Only £5.5million.

2. Taylor/Bolton – We suggested him last week and he duly got another goal. He has 27 points in his last three games. Bolton have a pretty favourable run in too.

3. Fellaini/Everton – The Toffees seem to be going through one of the strikerless phases meaning Timmy Cahill and Screech are being played further forward. Fellaini has three goals and three assists in his last four games, quite a nice return for someone who’s only £6.6 million.

Three to avoid:

1. Arsenal defenders – As I write this another one will probably get injured. Feel free to second guess the back four against Liverpool, at the moment it looks like being Eboue-Toure-Song-Silvestre. *Shudder*

2. Newcastle players – Shearer might keep them up but I don’t see anyone going on a crazy run of points.

3. Wigan players – Just beginning to slump a little with seventh place slipping away. Four defeats in six with two on the trot.
