Fantasy Football – Gameweek 15

by

Last week was one of the strangest gameweeks I can remember in a while. No goals for the Big Four meant many captain choices were a bust and in general it was a very low scoring week. The average score was only 48 and random players like Gretar Steinsson were scoring 11 points.

Steinsson - as shocked as we are that he scored 11 points.

Steinsson - as shocked as we are that he scored 11 points.

Stephen Ireland decided to continue his personal vendetta against me for getting rid of him by scoring and getting three bonus points again. Hopefully, normal service will be resumed this week.

Top 3 Captain Picks:

1. Gerrard/Liverpool – With Torres now out for a few weeks, Keane not scoring and me refusing to have anyone by the name of Dirk Kuyt (just say no) in my team this leaves Gerrard as the choice for big points. West Ham are still in trouble even though they won last week and Rafa will outwit Zola tactically. Don’t you just know it’s the kind of game Liverpool will win 1-0 with an 86th minute Gerrard winner.

2. Ronaldo/Man Utd – Obviously. From next week I might just start giving three alternative choices to Ronaldo as otherwise he’ll just be here from now until the end of the season. Man City had a good win last week but they’ll find Man Utd an altogether tougher proposition. Man City may well win but they won’t keep a clean sheet two weeks running.

3. Fabregas/Arsenal – Arsenal still have problems even though they have a new captain and a clean sheet under their belts. Chelsea away is a tough game but one thing you can say about Arsenal is they do turn up for the big matches. I fancy Fabregas to score/assist and in the absence of Adebayor (chief Arsenal bonus point hogger this year) he could maybe pick up some extra points if they avoid defeat.

Suggested Transfers In:

1. Arteta/Everton – A super player in 06/07, a bust last season, he’s returning to the levels of two years ago. Everton have been pretty solid of late so he’ll get points for clean sheets and as ever he is at the heart of all their creativity. A bit cheaper than Ashley Young and a similar output. Five assists thus far.

2. Malouda/Chelsea – Not someone I ever thought I’d suggest but he has vastly improved under Big Phil this year. Let’s not forget he was quality at Lyon and plenty of players have come to Chelsea with a great reputation only to be ruined (by a certain Jose). More assists (six) than any other midfielder so far and also has a couple of goals to boot. Also guaranteed a clean sheet point every other week.

3. Downing Turnbull/Middlesbrough – After mentioning last week how Boro players offer the least value points wise considering their high position in the table, I tried to think of who you could bring in if forced. I figured Downing would be the best bet considering he takes set pieces and corners and had a good game for England the other week. Then I remembered his habit of missing penalties, going missing in games and the fact that he has only two assists so far. Turnbull in goal it is then…

Players to avoid:

1. Torres/Liverpool – A week after suggesting you bring him in, I’m now saying get rid. He’s not been fully match fit since he came back from a hamstring injury and now he’s gone and tweaked it again. He’ll be out until at least the Arsenal game on December 21st. It’s a shame as Liverpool have a nice run of games coming upway but the money you save should allow you to strengthen other areas.

2. Bendtner/Arsenal – Has had a few weeks to make an impression and hasn’t. Wearing pink boots and scoring in the Champions League does not count. Admittedly him being in the team has come when Arsenal have been playing very poorly so he may not have received the same service as when they play well but he’s not going to do anything against Chelsea. Is he?

3. Alex/Chelsea – Has been declared fit for Sunday after missing the last two games but Ivanovic may well keep his place. Has scored some easy points when he’s played but Ricky Carvalho is due back next week anyway.

How is Cesc a better captain choice than Fat Frank? Is it just because you don’t have “room” for Lampard in your Fantasy Team?

So, remind me who ended up getting more points this week?
